22 carat gold proof quarter Krugerrand from a limited edition of just 2,000 pieces. These influential gold bullion coins have been produced by the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint since 1967. Today, collectors can enjoy limited edition proof Krugerrands which boast a fine mirror finish and additional serrations to the edge. Like all Krugerrands, the obverse of this fractional piece shows the head and shoulders of Boer statesman Paul Kruger who gives these coins their name. The text around reads ‘SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA’. This design by Otto Schultz was first used in the late nineteenth century and was revived for use on these coins. The reverse by Coert Steynberg features the instantly recognisable image of a ‘pronking’ springbok with the date - 2022 - either side. The weight and composition are listed below: ‘FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD’. This coin measures 22.00 millimetres in diameter and is composed of 8.48 grams of 91.67% gold: that’s 7.78 grams of pure gold or a quarter troy ounce. This makes 1/4 Krugerrands just a little heavier than a British ‘full’ Sovereign. These coins are strengthened with a fractional amount of copper which gives them a distinctive reddish colour.
