Krugerrands take their name from Otto Schultz's portrait of South African politician Paul Kruger that appears on their obverse, originally designed for historic South African coins. The inscription reads 'SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA'.
The reverse shows the instantly recognisable springbok design by Coert Steynberg, used on these gold coins since 1967. The words '1/4 KRUGERRAND' are shown above with 'FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD' below.
Quarter Ounce Krugerrands are composed of 8.48 grams of 22-carat gold (actual gold weight: 7.78 grams) and measure 22.00 millimetres in diameter. This 2018 issue boasts a premium proof finish.
The South African Mint confirmed that just 2,000 quarter-ounce gold proof Krugerrands were to be struck in this limited edition presentation in 2018, though Hern suggests that substantially fewer were issued.
This pre-owned proof Krugerrand is supplied encapsulated in the original SA Mint black case, complete with an individually numbered certificate, confirming the authenticity of the coin within.
