Set of four South African Krugerrand with a special mint mark to commemorate the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill. 2015 the anniversary of Churchill’s death in 1965 at the age of 90. While he’s better known in the UK for his time as Prime Minister, during and after the Second World War, Churchill was a solider before he was a statesman. Having previously served in India and Sudan, he was an aspiring MP and a war correspondent at the time the Second Boer War broke out. After a brief period interned in a POW camp in Pretoria, Churchill rejoined the army as a lieutenant in the South African Light Horse regiment in 1900, taking part in the Siege of Ladysmith. The .925 sterling silver medallion included in this set pays tribute to Churchill’s role in the second South African War, depicting him in his youth, wearing a slouch hat, the reverse shows the ship - the RMS Dunottar Castle - that took Churchill to Cape Town in 1899. The ‘WINSTON CHURCHILL 50 YEARS’ mint mark can be found on the reverse of the 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz Krugerrand that feature in this set, above the iconic springbok motif, modelled in the 1940s by Coert Steynberg. This is paired with the instantly recognisable bust of Paul Kruger to the obverse. The gold proof coins in this 2015 set have a combined weight of 62.77 grams, equating to an actual gold weight of 57.54 grams. Only 100 of these sets have been issued by the SA Mint and this one comes in its original wooden presentation box with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
