From a limited edition presentation of just 400, this 2004 Krugerrand set celebrates the legacy of Paul Kruger (1825-1904). Influential in the foundation of the South African Republic and four times its president, the Boer statesman was responsible for introducing the state’s first legal currency. His name was honoured in 1967 when the first Krugerrands were minted, combined a tribute to this Kruger with ‘Rand’ the modern currency of South Africa. By 1980, these 22 carat gold coins accounted for 90% of the global bullion market, inspiring many imitations. Today, they are available in multiple metals and finishes, as well as in sets. This 2004 set contains a full 1oz Krugerrand and three fractional issues: 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz. In total the gold coins in this set weigh 62.78 grams, equating to 57.55 grams of fine gold. Each piece is struck in a fine proof finish, exhibiting more detail than similar bullion coins. Also included is a .925 silver medallion bearing a portrait of Kruger. The finish is preserved by individual coin capsules which are stored in a bespoke case from the South African Mint, lined with velvet and made of wood. A numbered certificate of authenticity is included which presents biographical information on Paul Krugers life and achievements.

2004 Paul Kruger commemorative four coin gold proof Krugerrand set.

South African Krugerrands

The name Krugerrand combines the official currency of South Africa - the Rand - with the name of influential South African statesman, Paul Kruger, who appears on the obverse side of these coins.

These 22 carat gold coins were introduced in 1967 using metal processed by the Rand Refinery, struck by the South African Mint. They proved an enormous success, accounting for more than 90% of the global bullion market by 1980 and inspiring similar bullion coins from countries around the world.

Today, Krugerrands are available in other metals, a range of fractional weights and with a collectible proof finish. These coins, however, maintain the specifications set down more than 50 years ago, including the distinctive springbok reverse, celebrating South Africa’s national animal.

Kruger Commemorative Set

We know that Krugerrands are named after Paul Kruger, but who was he? Born in 1825, he would go on to play a key role in the formation of the South African Republic, serving as its president four times between 1883 and 1900, encompassing the period of the First Boer War. Leaving for Europe during the Second Boer War he lived the rest of his life in exile and is today remembered as the personification of Afrikanerdom.

A .925 silver medallion accompanies the four coins in this set, bearing a portrait of Kruger to the obverse.

The coins in the set are:

  • A 2004 Gold Proof 1 Ounce Krugerrand (33.93 grams - 1 troy ounce of gold)
  • A 2004 Gold Proof Half Ounce Krugerrand (16.97 grams - 0.5 troy ounces)
  • A 2004 Gold Proof Quarter Ounce Krugerrand (8.48 grams - 0.25 troy ounces)
  • And a 2004 Gold Proof Tenth Ounce Krugerrand (3.39 grams - 0.10 troy ounces)

The total weight of the coins in this collection is 62.78 grams, equating to 57.55 grams of fine gold.

Collectible Four Coin Set

All the coins in this set are struck in 22 carat gold to specifications established in the 1960s. The remaining weight is copper. The proof finish of these coins is achieved through multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies. Intended for collector, proof Krugerrands have more edge serrations than their bullion counterparts.

Just 400 of these sets were issued in 2004 and this one has the numbered certificate of authenticity to prove its part of this limited edition. The certificate doubles as a booklet on Paul Kruger.

The four Krugerrands in this set are sealed in their original capsules within a red velvet lined wood case.
