Public Libraries Act 2000 gold proof UK 50p coin. The 1850 Public Library Act allowed UK local authorities to establish free public libraries, marking a significant step in making knowledge and education more accessible to the general public. 150 years, on The Royal Mint celebrated the legacy of the Public Library Act with a commemorative coin, designed by Mary Milner Dickens. Her reverse depicts a book with turning pages, forming the roof of a classical library building. It's an appealing design that was also used on currency coins, but can be appreciated to its best effect on this 22-carat gold proof issue. Just 710 of these Libraries' 50p coins were issued in the year 2000, with our pre-owned examples supplied in the original presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.

The obverse of this Public Library Act coin shows Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, together with an inscription which reads 'ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 2000'.

Public Library Act 1850 50p

Mary Milner Dickens' design for the reverse of the Libraries 50p features a book with turning pages, forming the roof of a column library building with 'PUBLIC LIBRARIES' on its pediment, the anniversary dates (1850 2000) above and '50 PENCE' to the right.

22-Carat Gold Proof Coin

This is one of the first commemorative Fifty Pence coins minted in the new, smaller size, following modifications to the denomination. It's struck in 15.50 grams of solid 22-carat gold with a proof finish and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter.

Official Royal Mint Collectable

This pre-owned coin is part of a very limited mintage and is supplied in its original presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. The Royal Mint authorised the release of 2,000 of these gold Library 50ps, but it appears that only 710 were actually issued, making them scarce and sought-after.
