These sought-after bullion coins were produced in Milan, Turin and Rome between 1861 and 1878 with mintmarks to the reverse indicating the mint below the arms of the Kingdom of Italy. The obverse shows a left-facing bear head portrait of the King with the date below. Vittorio Emanuele was King of Sardinia from 1849 to 1861, when he assumed the title of King of the newly unified independent Italy. He was succeeded in 1878 by his son, Umberto I.
