Buy a 1998 EEC 50p Gold Proof

Gold proof UK 50p, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the United Kingdom's entry into the European Economic Community, as well as the UK's Presidency of the European Union. This official commemorative coin was made by The Royal Mint in 1998 and features an appealing reverse design by respected sculptor John W Mills. His work shows the twelve stars of the EU flag, bursting forth like fireworks onto the coins surface. It's a popular design, also used on currency coins but here shown to its best advantage in 22-carat gold with a proof finish. Just 1,177 of these gold EEC 50ps were issued by the UK's national mint, and out pre-owned examples are supplied in the original case with a numbered certificate.

Portrait Of Queen Elizabeth II

Ian Rank-Broadley's regal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse, together with an inscription which reads 'ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 1998 ·'. Introduced this year, the Rank-Broadley effigy was the fourth image of Her Majesty used on her coinage.

European Economic Community 50p

The reverse of this commemorative coin is inspired by the twelve stars of the European Union flag, which appear like fireworks in this design by John Mills. 'EU' is inscribed at the base of the stars with '1973' and '1998'on  either side, with '50 PENCE' below.

22-Carat Gold Proof Coin

This is one of the first commemorative Fifty Pence coins minted in the new, smaller size, following modifications to the denomination. It's struck in 15.50 grams of solid 22-carat gold with a proof finish and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter.

Limited Edition Collectable

The Royal Mint authorised the release of 1,500 of these European Economic Community 50p coins in solid gold, but it appears that just 1,177 were actually issued. This is a limited edition pre-owned coin, supplied in the original presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
