22 carat gold 1/2oz South African Krugerrand. Like all Krugerrands, the obverse of this coin shows the head and shoulders of Boer statesman, Paul Kruger who gives these coins their name. The text around reads ‘SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA’. The design was by Otto Schultz. The reverse by Coert Steynberg features the instantly recognisable image of a ‘pronking’ springbok with the date - 1997 - either side. The weight and composition are listed below: ‘FYNGOUD 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD’. This coin is composed of 16.96 grams of 91.7% gold: that’s 15.55 grams of pure gold. The diameter is 27.07 millimetres and the edge is milled. These influential gold bullion coins have been produced by the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint since 1967 and remain popular. The half ounce version was introduced in 1980. This 1997 bullion coin comes in a SA Mint case without a capsule.
