This gold proof Sovereign was issued by The Royal Mint in 1989 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first Tudor Sovereigns.
Drawing inspiration from these historic hammered gold coins, designer Bernard Sindall created a highly distinctive obverse and reverse for the 1989 Sovereign range. His design features Queen Elizabeth II, crowned and seated on the throne, while the reverse displays a crowned shield of arms set upon a Tudor rose.

1989 gold Sovereigns feature a reverse inspired by Tudor coins, designed by Bernard Sindall, which centres on a crowned shield of royal arms on top of a blooming Tudor rose with 'ANNIVERSARY · OF · THE · GOLD · SOVEREIGN · 1489 · 1989' around.
The obverse, also by Sindall, displays a dramatic full-length portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, seated on a throne with a sceptre in each hand. The lettering around the edge reads 'ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REG · FID · DEF'.
Since 1817, British gold Sovereigns have been struck in 7.98 grams of 91.67% fine gold. This edition boasts a proof finish, achieved with multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies for a high-contrast, ultra-detailed appearance.
Published records indicate that 10,535 of these Sovereigns were issued individually in 1989, with further coins included in proof Sovereign sets. They remain some of the most sought-after Sovereigns in the modern series.
This 1989 gold proof 500th Anniversary Sovereign has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company and is supplied in a sealed holder with a label displaying the unique certification number.
