The obverse of this 1989 coin features Raphael Maklouf's distinctive portrait head of Queen Elizabeth II, with '100 POUNDS' below and '· ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRATIA · REGINA · F · D ·' around.
Philip Nathan designed the iconic image of the legendary Britannia, which appears on the reverse of this coin, depicting the warrior queen standing on a cliff's edge, holding a trident and a shield. The legend reads '· ONE · OUNCE · FINE · · GOLD · · BRITANNIA · 1989 ·'.
Back in the 1980s, Britannias were struck in one troy ounce of 22-carat (91.67%) gold, rather than the 24-carat metal used to make their modern counterparts. This attractive proof issue displays mirrored surfaces and finely frosted devices.
The mintage figures for this issue are notably low, with just 338 1oz gold proof Britannias known to have been issued by The Royal Mint in 1989. This pre-owned example is supplied in the original presentation case with a numbered certificate.
