Rare, high-grade 1980 proof Krugerrand graded PF 68 by NGC.
Gold proof 1980 Half Krugerrands feature the instantly recognisable image of Paul Kruger on the obverse with 'SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA' around it. This design is attributed to Otto Schultz.
The first 1/2 Krugerrands feature the same reverse design as their larger 1oz counterparts. Coert Steynberg's springbok divides the date (1980), with '1/2 KRUGERRAND' above and 'FYNGOUD 1/2OZ FINE GOLD' below.
This coin is struck in 16.965 grams of 22-carat gold. That equates to an actual gold weight of 15.55 grams, exactly half a troy ounce and half the gold content of a 1oz Krugerrand. This sought-after example boasts a fine proof finish, identified by the high contrast between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices.

This 1980-dated proof Half Krugerrand has been graded PF 68 Ultra Cameo by NGC on their 70-point scale. At the time of writing only one coin from this issue was known in a higher grade. Unique certification number: 2915841-005.
1/2oz Krugerrands were first issued in 1980 by the SA Mint, following the introduction of the 1oz Krugerrand in 1967. Half Krugerrands have been minted in every year though for some dates only a proof issue is available.
