Buy a 1966 Rhodesia Gold £1

22-carat gold proof One Pound coin, minted for Rhodesia in 1966. These coins are identical in size, weight and purity to a British Sovereign and were produced by the South African Mint for the new Rhodesian national bank, not long after the white separatist minority government had declared independence in November 1965. Following a 15-year guerrilla war, Rhodesia would emerge as the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980. Only 5,000 of these gold Rhodesian £1 coins were issued in 1966, with 2,000 included in three-coin proof sets, and they feature Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, paired with a reverse showing a lion holding a tusk - the state symbol of Rhodesia. These historic gold proof coins are an interesting addition to any collection.

Lion And Tusk Reverse

The reverse, designed by Thomas Sasseen, displays the image of a lion holding a tusk - the logo of the British South Africa Company and symbol of Rhodesia - with 'RHODESIA' above and 'ONE POUND' below.

Queen Elizabeth II Portrait

The obverse of this highly collectable gold proof coin displays Arnold Machin's second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with 'ELIZABETH THE SECOND' inscribed around.

22-Carat Sovereign-Sized Coin

These coins are the same size and weight as a British gold Sovereign, originally struck in 7.98 grams of 22-carat gold with a proof finish. They measure about 22 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge.

Made By The SA Mint

Rhodesian proof coins were struck at the South African Mint for the new Rhodesian national bank as presentation pieces. Records indicate that some 5,000 of these One Pound coins were produced in 1966.

Rhodesian Gold Proof Sets

2,000 of these historic coins were included in scarce three-coin sets, alongside a gold Five Pound and a 10 Shilling piece. Individually issued pieces were originally supplied boxed, but many have lost this over the years.
