A United States of America gold $20 or Double Eagle, dated 1924. An example of what is known as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, named for its designer, the renowned sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The obverse of this 1924 gold $20 shows Lady Liberty standing in front of the rays of the sun, holding aloft a torch and olive branch. She is surrounded by 48 stars, representing the number of states in the union at the time the coin was minted. The lack of mint mark above the date indicates that it was minted in Philadelphia. The reverse features an eagle in flight, again backed by the rays of the sun. This coin measures 34 millimetres in diameter and weighs in at 33.34 grams of .900 gold. The Double Eagle was among the largest US gold coins ever issued and makes an interesting investment: a sensible addition to any collection.
