Rare 22-carat gold George V 15 Rupee coin, struck in British India in 1918. Obverse: left-facing bust of King George V wearing the Imperial State Crown as well as the Collar of the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Bath. Legend: ‘GEORGE V KING EMPEROR’. Artist: Edgar Bertram Mackennal. Reverse: ’15 RUPEES INDIA 1918’ on four lines in the centre, surrounded by a ten-pointed star, entwined with flourishes and scrolls. George V was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions as well as Emperor of India from his succession in 1910 until his death in 1936. During his reign a new branch of The Royal Mint was opened in Bombay (Mumbai) in what was then British India. The Mint’s Bombay branch struck gold Sovereigns for a single year. These 1918 coins - featuring an ‘I’ mintmark - are understandably popular with collectors but their appeal is perhaps superseded by another gold coin, struck in Bombay in the same year. 1918 gold fifteen Rupee coins have the same specifications as a full Sovereign: there composed of 7.98 grams of 916.7 gold and have a diameter of 22.05 millimetres. These coins were struck with the same reverse design as the 1870 gold 10 Rupee of Queen Victoria with the value changed. Gold 15-Rupees were only struck in 1918, like the Bombay Sovereign, and are unusual for not having been minted in Calcutta like the majority of other gold coinage, issued during the Raj. Mintage: 2,110,000. Grade: EF+ - Minimal contact marks and a contamination mark under 8 of date, good eye appeal. References: Pridmore 26, KM 525.
