The final Melbourne mint gold Sovereign from the reign of King Edward VII (S 3971, Marsh 194). Records show that 3,054,547 'full' Sovereigns were struck in Melbourne in 1910. This Australian branch of the Royal Mint was established in 1872 and continued to strike gold Sovereigns through into the reign of King George V. These coins are distinguished by a tiny 'M' mintmark to reverse, just below the dragon that Saint George, mounted on horseback, is slaying with his sword. The obverse of this 1910-dated coin features George William de Saulles' portrait of King Edward VII. Edward came to the throne in 1901 following the passing of his mother, Queen Victoria. His short reign ended in 1910, making this Melbourne mint coin the last in this monarch's series.
