Collectable 1909 King Edward VII gold 'full' Sovereign, struck at the Melbourne mint (S 3971, Marsh 193). The Melbourne mint opened in 1872 as the second Australian branch of the Royal Mint. 22-carat gold Sovereigns were struck at this branch mint to the same specifications as their London mint counterparts, with the exception of a tiny 'M' mintmark to the reverse. This can be seen on the ground below the image of Saint George, mounted on a rearing horse, pointing his sword at a prone dragon. This classic coinage design dates back to 1817 and is the work of Benedetto Pistrucci. The obverse of 1909 Melbourne mint Sovereigns shows a portrait of King Edward VII by British artist George William de Saulles. This effigy features on all Edward VII Sovereigns, including the 3,029,538 struck in this year at Melbourne.
