King Edward VII gold 'full' Sovereign, struck at the Melbourne mint in 1908 (S 3971, Marsh 192). Sovereigns struck in 1908 feature George William de Saulles' coinage effigy of King Edward VII on the obverse, along with an inscription that proclaims Edward King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith and Emperor of India. The reverse shows the instantly recognisable image of St George, England's patron saint, mounted on a rearing horse, his sword pointed at a prone dragon. A tiny 'M' mintmark to the ground beneath the dragon, indicates that this coin was struck at the Melbourne, Australia branch of the Royal Mint in 1908, one of 3,080,148 22-carat gold coins issued in this year.
