Edward VII 1905 gold Sovereign, struck at the Melbourne mint (S 3971, Marsh 189). Newspapers in 1905 were dominated by news of the Russo-Japanese War, which led to the first Russian Revolution. In Australia, the Melbourne mint struck some 3,633,838 gold 'full' Sovereigns. These 22-carat gold coins are distinguished by a tiny 'M' to the ground line beneath the image of Saint George on a rearing horse, depicted in the act of slaying a prone dragon with his sword. This design was created for the first modern gold Sovereigns, issued in 1817, and is the work of Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci. The obverse of this 1905 coin features the uncrowned definitive coinage portrait of King Edward VII, designed by George William de Saulles. A small 'M' mintmark can be found on the ground below the image of Saint George and the dragon on the reverse of this gold coin. Benedetto Pistrucci, whose initials can be seen to the right of the date, created this design in the early 19th century.
