On 1 January of this year, Edward VII was proclaimed Emperor of India, a title that is reaffirmed in the inscriptions on his coinage. This 1903 gold Sovereign also identifies Edward as King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith. This 22-carat gold coin was struck at the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint, one of 3,521,780 of its kind minted in this year. These coins are identified by the tiny 'M' mintmark on the reverse.
