Jubilee Head 1893 gold Sovereigns, struck at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint (S 3868C, Marsh 144, DISH S17). These coins feature the final appearance of the controversial Jubilee Head portrait. First seen on 1887 Sovereigns, this image of Queen Victoria, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm, shows the Queen wearing the Small Diamond Crown and a long lace veil in a nod to her permanent state of mourning, following the death of Prince Albert. The Jubilee Head coinage proved unpopular with the Queen and the public, prompting the Royal Mint to commission a new effigy. These 1893 Sydney mint Sovereigns, from an annual issue of 1,498,000, are one of the last relics of a short-lived but much-studied period in Victorian coinage.

Jubilee Head Portrait Of Queen Victoria

Joseph Edgar Boehm's coinage portrait of Queen Victoria appears on the obverse of this Sydney mint coin. The effigy shows Victoria wearing a small crown and a lace veil. The inscription reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:'.

Saint George And The Dragon Reverse

The reverse of 1893 Jubilee Head Sovereigns features Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the dragon design, created for the first milled Sovereigns in the early 19th century. The date (1893) appears below the dragon and an 'S' mintmark can be found on the ground line.

Branch Mint Coin Struck In 22-Carat Gold

Sydney mint 'full' Sovereigns, like their London counterparts, are struck in 22-carat gold. These coins weigh approximately 7.98 grams and measure just over 22 millimetres in diameter from milled edge to milled edge.

Mintage Figures 1893-S Jubilee Sovereigns

Records indicate that 1,498,000 Jubilee Head gold Sovereigns were struck at the Sydney branch mint in 1893. Widowed Head Sovereigns were also struck with this date at Sydney.

Collecting Jubilee Head Gold Sovereigns

The Jubilee Head Sovereign series is short but remains a challenging and rewarding collecting goal for the serious numismatist. With three different mints issuing this portrait, as well as a range of variants, completing a full date run can prove difficult.
