1890 Victoria Gold Full Sovereign Sydney Mint Second Legend Coin
Jubilee Head With Second Legend
Joseph Edgar Boehm's Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria appears on the obverse of these 1890 coins, together with a legend that reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:'. These coins feature the so-called 'second legend' where the word 'REG:' is positioned closer to Victoria's crown.
Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George
Benedetto Pistrucci's instantly recognisable Saint George and the dragon design is shown on the reverse of these Sydney mint coins, depicting England's patron saint mounted on horseback. The date (1890) appears below with the artist's initials to the right and an 'S' mintmark to the ground line.
22-Carat Gold Branch Mint Sovereign
Australian 'full' Sovereigns are struck in 22-carat gold, just like their London mint counterparts. These coins weigh approximately 7.98 grams and measure 22.05 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge.
How Many 1890S Sovereigns Were Minted?
2,751,840 gold Sovereigns with the second legend variation were struck at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint in 1890. A further 52,160 coins were issued with the rarer first legend obverse.
Collecting Sydney Mint Jubilee Sovereigns
The Jubilee Head Sovereign series is short but remains a challenging and rewarding collecting goal for the serious numismatist. With three different mints issuing this portrait, as well as a range of variants, completing a full date run can prove difficult.
