What Are Gold Sovereigns Made Of?
Gold 'full' Sovereigns, including those struck at branch mints, are made from 22-carat gold. These coins measure just over 22 millimetres in diameter and weigh approximately 7.98 grams.
1886-S Sovereign Mintage Figures
The reported mintage at the Sydney mint for the 1886 calendar year was 1,667,00, which also includes shield-reverse Sovereigns struck concurrently, though these coins are somewhat more scarce than the St George issues.
Historic Branch Mint Gold Sovereigns
Collecting Sydney mint Sovereigns is challenging and rewarding. The two reverses and numerous variants make a complete collection difficult. The Sydney Sovereigns of the 1870s and 1880s are particularly complex and highly sought-after.
