Saint George reverse gold Sovereigns, struck in 1886 at the Sydney mint (S 3858E, Marsh 123). The Sydney branch of the Royal Mint struck its first Sovereigns in 1855 in the wake of the Australian gold rush. By the 1880s, the design of Sydney Sovereigns has largely been aligned with those being minted in London with the exception of a tiny 'S' mintmark, seen on the obverse of this 1886 issue. 1886-S Sovereigns were issued with two distinct reverse designs. This is the Saint George variant, showing Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Sovereign engraving. The obverse features William Wyon's youthful portrait of Queen Victoria, who in 1886 was fast approaching her Golden Jubilee year.

Young Head Portrait With 'S' Mintmark

The obverse of these coins features William Wyon's left-facing Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria with the artist's initials to the truncation of her neck. A tiny 'S' mintmark appears below. The inscription reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'.

Saint George And The Dragon Reverse

England's patron saint is shown mounted on a rearing horse with a short tail. He points his sword at a winged dragon. The date (1886) appears beneath the design, which was created by Benedetto Pistrucci in the early 19th century.

What Are Gold Sovereigns Made Of?

Gold 'full' Sovereigns, including those struck at branch mints, are made from 22-carat gold. These coins measure just over 22 millimetres in diameter and weigh approximately 7.98 grams.

1886-S Sovereign Mintage Figures

The reported mintage at the Sydney mint for the 1886 calendar year was 1,667,00, which also includes shield-reverse Sovereigns struck concurrently, though these coins are somewhat more scarce than the St George issues.

Historic Branch Mint Gold Sovereigns

Collecting Sydney mint Sovereigns is challenging and rewarding. The two reverses and numerous variants make a complete collection difficult. The Sydney Sovereigns of the 1870s and 1880s are particularly complex and highly sought-after.
