William Wyon's 'W.W.' initials appear on the truncation of his portrait of Queen Victoria with an 'M' mintmark shown below. The legend reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'.
The classic Saint George and the dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci is shown on the reverse of these Melbourne mint coins. This engraving was first used on gold Sovereigns in 1817. On this issue the date (1882) is shown below the ground line.
Sovereigns struck at the Melbourne mint follow the same specifications as their London and Sydney mint counterparts, with each coin minted in 22-carat gold with a milled edge. These coins weigh approximately 7.98 grams each and measure just over 22 millimetres in diameter.
We know that 2,094,300 gold 'full' Sovereigns were struck with this Saint George design at the Melbourne mint in 1882, with a further 371,481 minted with the shield reverse.
Historic branch mint Sovereigns remain popular with collectors looking to complete date sets and those interested in the early history of Australian coinage. Our 1882-M Saint George Sovereigns are individually graded and authenticated and ready to add to your cabinet.
