Buy a 1882-M Sovereign

Gold 'full' Sovereigns struck at the Melbourne mint in 1882 (S 3857B, Marsh 104). Records show that 2,094,300 Sovereigns were issued by this Australian branch mint in this year, a decade after it had opened as the second colonial outpost of the Royal Mint in 1872. All of these 22-carat gold coins show William Wyon's Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria with an 'M' mintmark below. This inaccurately youthful design, used until Victoria was in her 60s, is paired with the instantly recognisable image of Saint George slaying a dragon, the date (1882) below. This classic Sovereign design is attributed to Benedetto Pistrucci and has been a perennial presence on these sought-after coins for two centuries.

1882 Melbourne Sovereign Obverse

William Wyon's 'W.W.' initials appear on the truncation of his portrait of Queen Victoria with an 'M' mintmark shown below. The legend reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'.

Short Tail St George Reverse Design

The classic Saint George and the dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci is shown on the reverse of these Melbourne mint coins. This engraving was first used on gold Sovereigns in 1817. On this issue the date (1882) is shown below the ground line.
