Collectable 1877 gold Sovereigns, struck at the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint (S 3857, Marsh 99). Melbourne mint Sovereigns from the 1870s are identified by a small 'M' mintmark, which can be seen on the obverse, just below William Wyon's portrait of Queen Victoria. Brought into use following her accession to the throne in 1837, the so-called Young Head was a mainstay on the coinage of the British Empire for decades, long after it had become inaccurate. This instantly recognisable bust is paired with a reverse showing Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon design. While in some years, the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint issued Sovereigns with both the St George design and a shield reverse, in 1877, only the former was struck. The annual mintage was 1,487,316.

A variant of William Wyon's Young Head portrait features on the obverse of these early Melbourne mint coins, the artist's initials 'buried' in the truncation of Queen Victoria's neck. An 'M' mintmark is shown below and the inscription reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'.

Saint George And The Dragon Reverse

Benedetto Pistrucci's interpretation of the legend of Saint George and the dragon is shown on the reverse of 1877-M coins. This issue features a horse with a long tail with the date below and the artist's initials to the right.
