1874 Sydney mint Sovereigns from an annual mintage of 1,899,000 (S 3858A, Marsh 113). 1874 saw the birth of Sir Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister, military officer and author. Queen Victoria was on the throne, ruling an empire that covered 9.5 million square miles and a population of 230 million people. These gold coins were issued in Victoria's name in one of the furthest reaches of the Empire. The Sydney Mint had been the first colonial outpost of the Royal Mint to open in 1855, striking Sovereigns from the gold that was rushing into New South Wales. These 1874 Sydney Sovereigns feature William Wyon's portrait of the Queen on the obverse, paired with an image of Saint George slaying a dragon on the reverse.
