These 1873-S Sovereigns feature the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse with a small 'S' mintmark below William Wyon's effigy, identifying the mint. The reverse of this issue features Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the dragon design. Records show that 1,478,000 Sovereigns were issued at Sydney in this year, with these coins remaining sought-after and collectable.

These 1872 Sovereigns feature the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria, originally engraved by William Wyon. Victoria is shown facing left, her hair dressed with two ribbons. The inscription reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'. An 'S' mintmark below the effigy identifies these coins as a product of the Sydney mint.

George And The Dragon 1872-S Reverse

Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the dragon design is shown on the reverse with the date (1872) below. This design was created in 1817 and is still used on gold Sovereigns today.
