Highly collectable 1872 gold Sovereigns struck at the Sydney mint (S 3852E, Marsh 119). These 1872 coins feature the Saint George reverse, showing England's patron saint wielding his sword against a winged beast from his position on horseback. This design is the work of Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci and has been a perennial presence on these 22-carat gold coins since they were first struck in 1817. Sovereigns with a shield reverse were also issued by the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint in 1872, with the total output for the year totalling 1,815,000. The obverse of these coins features the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria, originally engraved by William Wyon. A tiny 'S' mintmark appears below the bust, definitively identifying these 1872 coins as a product of the first Australian branch mint.
