Double struck type IB shield 1870 Sovereign with raised initials. Obverse: young head portrait of Queen Victoria, facing left, her hair bound with two fillets. 'W.W.' initials to truncation of neck for the celebrated engraver William Wyon are notably raised rather than incuse on this example. Date below is visibly but finely double struck with same apparent in latter part of legend which reads: 'VICTORIA DEI GRATIA'. Reverse shows square topped shield of royal arms, surmounted by crown and surrounded by laurel branches, tied at the bottom with a ribbon. Die number: 123 (highest known for this date). Tiny national flowers to base. Legend reads: 'BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:'. An unusual piece, particularly the raised initials. This coin is composed of 7.98 grams of 22 carat gold and has a diameter of 22.05 millimetres. Annual mintage: 2,189,960.
