1864 Victoria Gold Full Sovereign Sydney Mint Reverse

Buy a 1864 Victoria Gold Full Sovereign Sydney Mint Coin

Collectable 1864 Sydney mint gold Sovereign (Marsh A369, Friedberg 10). 2,698,500 gold 'full' Sovereigns were issued by this branch mint in 1864. These coins were issued in the wake of the Australian gold rushes which brought mass migration to the colonies and triggered the establishment of a mint in Sydney, New South Wales, that began striking Sovereigns in 1855. These early Australian Sovereigns are distinct from their London mint counterparts, bearing a unique portrait of Queen Victoria and wearing a wreath of banksia blossoms. This is paired with a reverse that proudly proclaims that these 22-carat gold coins were struck on Australian soil. A key addition to any serious Sovereign collection.

Early Sydney Sovereign Specifications

Like their British counterparts, 1864 Sydney mint Sovereigns are struck in 22-carat gold to a specification established in 1817 when the first of these iconic gold coins were minted. Early Sydney Sovereigns like this one are known to be made from slightly finer gold, leading to them being favoured by traders.

1864 Sydney Sovereign Mintage Figures

In 1864, the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint struck 2,698,500 gold 'full' Sovereigns. Further gold coins, albeit with a very different design, were also struck in London.

Buying Historic Sydney Mint Sovereigns

High-grade examples of early Sydney mint Sovereigns like this 1864-S Sovereign are notoriously challenging to acquire due to harsh circulation conditions in the Australian colonies. Collectors appreciate these historic gold coins both for their scarcity and for their connection to Australian history.
