Early gold Sovereign, struck in 1820 with a 'closed' 2 variation. Obverse: laureate head of King George III with tighter curls, facing right. Artist: Benedetto Pistrucci. Legend: 'GEORGIUS III D: G: BRITANNIAR: REX F: D:'. Note ascending colon, compact date and the curled taper of the '2', touching the stem. Reverse: St George wearing cape and helmet, mounted on a rearing horse. England's patron saint holds one half of a broken spear, the other half lies on the ground near a dragon which cowers under the horses hooves. Stylised garter motif around bearing the words 'HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE ·'. George III died on 20 January 1820 but his name and portrait were used on Sovereigns for a good while afterwards. These gold coins had been introduced in late 1817, taking their name from an older, hammered Tudor coin. Both sides of the first milled Sovereigns were designed by the Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci. This example is struck in 7.98 grams of 22 carat gold with a 22.05 millimetre diameter and a milled edge. Marsh gives closed 2 1820 Sovereigns an 'R' rating though all George III Sovereigns are hard to find in good condition. Grade: VF - Usual contact marks and wear under magnification for gold, around Very Fine. References: Marsh 4B, S 3785C.
