What Are Third Guineas?
Third Guineas are gold coins, issued between 1787 and 1813. Worth seven Shillings, they were introduced during the French Revolutionary Wars when gold was in short supply in order to pay the Bank of England's dividends.
Crown Reverse Design
The reverse of all 1806 gold Third Guineas displays a distinctive royal crown design engraved by Lewis Pingo with the date below and a star mintmark above. The Latin legend reads 'BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR'.
Second Laureate Head
The obverse displays the second laureate head of King George III, facing right, designed by Nathaniel Marchant and engraved by Pingo. The surrounding legend reads 'GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA'.
22-Carat Gold UK Coin
Third Guineas are struck in a 22-carat gold alloy, weigh about 2.8 grams and measure 17 millimetres in diameter, measured from milled edge to milled edge. These coins were produced by the Royal Mint at the Tower of London.
Collecting Historic Currency
Third Guineas are among the only gold issues struck in the decades before the Great Recoinage, when annual issues of 'full' Guineas ceased. This, along with their interesting economic context, makes these historic coins collectable.
