£2,750.00
A collectable and desirable gold Quarter Noble of king Henry the Fifth with a Pierced Cross mint mark, telling us that this coin was struck at the Tower mint of London. Henry V’s reign was short (1413 to 1422) but he’s noted for his military success, immortalised in Shakespeare’s Henry plays. The obverse of this gold coin features a central shield of royal arms with lis above, quatrefoils either side and a mullet below the right quatrefoil. This motif is enclosed within a tressure of arcs with annulets at the cusps, all within a beaded circle. The reverse shows a small lis at the centre of an ornate cross, terminating in lis. Trefoils and lions appear in the terminals. As on the obverse the design is enclosed within a double tressure of arcs, itself within a beaded circle. The legend, translated, reads ‘He shall be exalted in glory’. This highly graded example is an incredible collectors piece, a brilliant addition to any serious collection. Spink 1755, North 1382, Schneider 224.
