Hammered gold type V noble of Henry the Fourth, struck in either 1412 or 1413. In these years, at the end of Henry IV’s reign (1399-1413), the standard weight of his coinage had been produced. This was enacted to tackle a scarcity of gold and silver bullion and to provide a new revenue source for the king. Though, by this point in his reign, Henry was in ill health and had mostly handed over the reigns of government to his son who would rule as Henry V. The obverse of this gold coin shows the king in a ship at sea, holding a sword and a shield bearing the quartered royal arms. Trefoils appear on the side of his ship which sails on waves contained by beaded circle. A cross pattée mint mark identifies this as a product of the Tower mint. The reverse shows and ornamental cross terminating in decorative lis. Crowns and lions appear in the angles with one lion having an extra lis next to him. A ‘H’ with a pellet before it appears in the centre of the cross. The whole confection is enclosed within a double tressure with lis in the angles. Rare and sought-after. Spink 1515, North 1355, Schneider 708.
Grade: Grade: GF - Minor edge damage dose not distract, surface grainy or waterworn otherwise Good Fine and Rare
