This 1990 Gibraltar coin set, struck by the iconic Pobjoy Mint, was issued shortly after the British Overseas Territory adopted its own currency. And so this set of nine Gibraltar coins, from the £5 to 1p, is a collectable and early example of the currency, struck to brilliant uncirculated quality. The designs range from iconic wildlife to central figures to key landmarks important to Gibraltar. The collection also shows Raphael Maklouf's obverse effigy of Elizabeth II on the obverse. A particular striking coin is the Gibraltar £5, which features Hercules standing between two pillars. 1990 Gibraltar Coin Designs

The designs which are present on these Gibraltar coins are the first suite of homegrown coinage works to circulate in the Territory for over 150 years. On the Five Gibraltar Pound coin, Hercules is shown with the 'pillars' on either side of him, in reference to his cleaving of the Atlas Mountains. Other examples celebrate native wildlife, such as the Barbary Ape 5p. Overall, the set celebrates Gibraltar's identity both visually and culturally.

The Pobjoy Mint, which also struck annual sets for the Isle of Man, was commissioned to strike this Gibraltar set to its brilliant uncirculated standard. These legal tender Gibraltarian coins are arranged and presented in the original Pobjoy Mint folder.
