Four .925 sterling silver Queen Elizabeth II Maundy Money coins dated 1966. Maundy coins are distributed to the elderly by the reigning monarch as part of Maundy Thursday services in a uniquely British tradition. Initially, regular circulation coins were handed out but in the 17th century, the Royal Mint began to strike special coins for the occasion. Traditionally, recipients receive coins that total the age of the current King or Queen. During Her Majesty's reign, the Royal Maundy service has been held at different Anglican Cathedrals across the UK. In 1966 the venue was Westminster Abbey where Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953. These silver coins feature Mary Gillick's first definitive coin portrait of the young Queen, wearing a wreath of laurel leaves. The reverses show the classic crowned numeral design used on Maundy Money coins for centuries. The set includes a 1966 Maundy 4p, 3p, 2p and 1p coin. The coins in this set are uncirculated and presented raw in a modern red display case with 'MAUNDY MONEY' in gold lettering to the lid. Grade: see photos. References: S 4131.
