Historic British Coin Designs

Many collectors will recognise the reverse designs for these coins from their change, before the UK switched to a decimal coinage system in 1971, including the wren on the Farthing and the Golden Hind on the Halfpenny.

Mary Gillick's Portrait Of The Queen

The coins in this set, except the Coronation Crown, feature Mary Gillick's iconic laureate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, together with an inscription '+ ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA BRITT: OMN: REGINA'.

What Are UK Proof Coins?

Proof or 'specimen' coins are designed for collectors and are not designed for circulation. These coins are struck multiple times with specially polished dies to create pieces with mirrored surfaces and frosted designs.

Collecting British Proof Coins

While the proof coin sets issued by The Royal Mint today feature individual protective capsules, these 1950s sets were supplied loose in a fitted case, meaning that the coins inside usually show toning and signs of handling.
