Rare set of four silver Maundy coins in their original presentation case: the first issued in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty came to the throne on the passing of her father, King George VI, in 1952. 1953 saw Elizabeth's coronation and her first issue of coins, including silver Maundy money. These special coins are traditionally distributed by the reigning monarch at Maundy Thursday services, the day before Good Friday. The practice dates back centuries and is now held at a different British church or cathedral each year. These 1953 coins - denominated 4p, 3p, 2p and 1p - were the QEII Maundy coins gifted by Her Majesty in a ceremony held at St Paul's Cathedral. She had previously distributed her father's Maundy money. Each piece in this set is composed of .925 sterling silver and bears the first coin portrait of The Queen, created by Mary Gillick, which would continue to be used on these coins long after it fell out of use on circulating currency. The reverses shows the classic crowned numeral and oak wreath design, attributed to Jean Baptiste Merlen. These coins come in the original leather box, bearing the words 'MAUNDY MONEY' in gold on the lid. The case is somewhat battered but the coins inside are in excellent grade.
