2012 Royal Arms Shield One Pound Circulated Coin

Classic 2012 Royal Shield of arms UK One Pound, struck for circulation but since withdrawn following the introduction of new bi-metallic coins.

The design of these 2012 £1s was created by Matthew Dent and part of a new suite of definitive designs for circulating British currency, introduced in 2008 and inspired by the coat of arms of the United Kingdom. Other coins in the collection are notable for fitting together like a puzzle.

• 35,700,030 of these round, nickel-brass Pound coins were issued in 2012 - the only design for this year
• The obverse displays Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II
• The edge reads 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN', which translates from Latin as 'An ornament and a safeguard'
