Royal Shield of Arms design round 2009 UK One Pound coin, originally released into circulation but now withdrawn.

This design by Matthew Dent was introduced in 2008 as part of a major overhaul of the seven circulating UK coins. While 2009 £1 coins feature a complete Royal Shield, other change coins from the same year display snippets of the shield that can be put together like a puzzle.

  • The Royal Mint struck 27,625,600 of these nickel-brass coins for circulation in 2009
  • They feature Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse
  • The edge reads 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN', meaning 'An ornament and a safeguard'
