Silver Siliqua, struck at the mint of Lugdunum during the reign of Julian II. Obverse: draped and cuirassed bust, facing right wearing pearl diadem, prominent beads to strings at back of neck. Legend: ‘FL C LIVLIANVS PF AVG’. Beaded edge. Reverse: wreath with jewel at top and four lines of text in centre: ‘VOTIS / V / MVLTVS / X’. Below, possibly: ‘LVG’. A nephew of Constantine the Great, Julian was proclaimed emperor in 360, kicking off a civil war with his cousin, Constantius II that ended with Constantius’ death in 361. For his rejection of Christianity he is also referred to as Julian the Apostate. He was the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire. He was mortally wounded during a campaign against the Sassanian Empire and died in 363. This silver coin was struck at the mint of Lugdunum (modern day Lyon). Weight: 1.70 grams. Approximate diameter: 16.7 millimetres. EF/VF - Dark patination excellent bust details, reverse a little weaker.
