Limited edition silver coin from the fascinating British Monarchs collection. Celebrating some of the remarkable kings and queens who have graced British money, this new Royal Mint series will recreate 21 historic coins for a modern audience. This edition features a half-length portrait of King James I. The first monarch of the Stuart dynasty, James was already King of Scotland when he inherited the English throne in 1603, uniting the two crowns. This modern coin shows the armour-wearing portrait featured on Unites, remastered and refined by the design team at The Royal Mint. This is paired with Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, a distant descendant of James. One of just 1,250 pieces issued, this coin is struck to proof standard in 31.21 grams of 999 fine silver. It measures 38.61 millimetres across and has a face value of £2 / Two Pounds. New limited edition James the First 1oz silver coin from the British Monarchs collection.

British Monarchs Series

British coinage provides a fascinating insight into the reigns of the nation's monarchs, documenting developments in politics, art and technology across the centuries. The Royal Mint are celebrating this rich legacy with a new series focusing on the royals whose faces have graced our currency.

Billed as a five-year series, the British Monarchs collection will feature 21 Kings and Queens, starting with Tudor dynasty.

The first released featured King Henry VII with the second starring James I, the first of the Stuarts. He was already King of Scotland when he acceded to the English throne in 1603, following the death of Queen Elizabeth I. The hammered coinage James I issued included a range of new gold coins including the Laurel and the Unite, the latter named to celebrate the union of the two crowns that James brought about.

Portrait of James the First

The reverse of this new Royal Mint coin is inspired by the Unites struck during James I reign which featured a remarkable half-length portrait of the monarch, wearing a crown and armour and holding an orb and sceptre. This image has been carefully refined and recreated by the Mint's design team using modern minting technology. The legend reads: 'IACOBVS·D:G:MAG:BRIT:FRAN:ETC·HIB:REX·'.

This is paired with the current official coinage portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Jody Clark, in use on British money since 2015. The obverse bears the inscription 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS · 2022 ·'.
