The Royal Shield is part of the Royal Coat of Arms which is used for the monarch's official flag, as well as by courts and governments around the Commonwealth. It features a quartered shield depicting, in two quarters, the three lions of England, in one quarter, the rampant lion of Scotland, and in the final quarter, the harp of Ireland. This Royal Arms has been in the current form since the reign of Queen Victoria. This 2008 silver proof One Pound coin features the Royal Shield on the reverse, around which is the denomination 'ONE POUND.' It is part of a bold new series which was introduced by The Royal Mint in 2008. The reverses of coins between 50p and 1p were designed by Matthew Dent in such a way to reveal a single image when arranged together. Each of the six coins featured part of the Royal Shield, with the Pound Coin depicting the entire shield. From 2008 until 2016, this Royal Shield £1 was released annually, beginning with this silver proof version from 2008. An edge inscription is also used on this coin, reading 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' or 'an ornament and a safeguard.' The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty the Queen. A total of 5,000 £1 coins were issued in this silver proof format, and yours will come with its original packaging and certificate of authenticity. It weighs 9.50 grams and has a diameter of 22.50 millimetres. Struck in .925 sterling silver, this Pound coin is finished to proof standard meaning it is of higher quality and has greater definition than circulating coins.
