Piedfort Sovereigns are twice the weight of an ordinary 'full' Sovereign. They're struck in 15.96 grams of 22-carat gold, retaining the same diameter of 22.05 millimetres but with a double-thickness milled edge. Piedfort Sovereigns were first issued by The Royal Mint in 2017, reflecting an old tradition of extra-heavy coins that traces its origins to medieval France where 'piedfort' means 'heavy measure'.

Seventy years after she acceded to the throne in 1952, Her Majesty the Queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee: a remarkable milestone and a first for a British monarch.
