Buy a 995-997 Aethelred II CRVX Penny Brihtsige on Winchester

Silver CRVX type Penny of Aethelred II, struck at the mint of Winchester by the moneyer Brihtsige. Obverse: draped, left-facing profile bust with sceptre within linear circle: late transitional type (c995-997). Legend reads: ‘+ÆDELRED REX ANGLORX’ with ‘OR’ in ‘ANLORX’ ligated. Reverse: voided short cross within a linear circle with a pellet in the centre, the quarters created by the cross bearing the letters C R V X. Legend around: ‘+ BYRHSIGE MOPINT’ for Brihtsige and the mint of Winchester. This reverse lettering gives this type its name. Crux pennies are probably the largest issue of coinage from Aethelreds reign. Most were struck in Lincoln, London, Winchester and York, among the more than 70 mints in operation during the reign of Aethelred, according to North. Aethelred II’s epithet - ‘The Unready’ - suggests he was ill advised and one ill advised decision might be said to be paying off Viking raiders. Surviving coinage shows ‘peck marks’ from Viking bankers testing metal quality with a knife. Weight: 1.70 grams, diameter: 20.3 millimetres. Grade: VF - Dark to mid grey patina, good flan and strong details all round for Very Fine. S 1148, North 770.
