A rare and collectable hammered silver Groat of king Edward the Fourth, minted in the name of his father, Henry VIII. This posthumous issue was struck early in Edward VI’s reign at the Tower mint in London between 1547 and 1551. The obverse features the crowned sixth bust of Henry, bearded, facing forward and slightly to the right. The reverse shows a long cross with Suns in the forks, quartering a royal shield of arms. The Grapple mint mark can be clearly seen before ‘POSVI’. Thanks to Henry’s debasement policy, Edward VI’s early issues are hard to find in high grades but the range of die variations and mint marks make them interesting to study and collect. Spink 2403.
