An increasingly collectible Anglo-Gallic silver hammered Grand Blanc of Henry the Sixth: king of England from 1422 to 1461 then again from 1470 to 1471. Henry VI was the only English monarch also crowned king of France, succeeding on the death of his grandfather, Charles VI in 1422 though his claim was contested. This coin with a Crown mint mark clearly visible on both sides was struck at the mint of Paris between 1422 and 1436 and represents the high point of English rule in France. The obverse shows two shields, side by side, representing the two nations with ‘HERICVS’ above. The reverse shows a Latin cross with a fleur to the left and a tiny lion to the right, ‘HERICVS’ again below. A fascinating bit of medieval history.
