PAXS type Penny of William I, better known as William the Conqueror. Obverse shows a facing crowned bust with arms and hand to bottom of coin, holding sceptre. Figure in front of single-line circle. Legend reads: ‘+ PILLELM REX’. Reverse features cross pattée with large annulets in the angles. Within these annulets are the letters of the word ‘PAXS’ which lends this type its name. Legend reads: ‘+ IEPI ON LIINDNE’. Grade: EF - Good flan and attractive dark tones. Struck in 1.38 grams of .925 silver. Diameter: 19 millimetres. Spink 1257, North 848.
