Highly collectable 1928 'Wreath' Crown - one of a limited number struck by The Royal Mint in this year (S 4036, ESC 368, Bull 3633). Wreath Crowns get their name from their distinctive reverse, created by English artist George Kruger Gray. This features a royal crown surrounded by a decorative wreath of shamrocks, roses and thistles, with the words 'FID · · DEF · · IND · · IMP' above. This design is paired with Bertram Mackennal's classic coinage portrait of King George V, bare-headed and facing left. The Royal Mint struck these coins in 50% silver so the Bank of England could offer them to VIP clients as Christmas gifts. In 1928 some 9,034 coins were struck for this purpose. Most were kept as keepsakes, but a few are known to have entered circulation. This example remains in excellent condition and has been graded Extremely Fine (EF) by our expert numismatists.
