1874 Victoria Sixpence Die 52 Plain 4

1874 Queen Victoria Silver Sixpence Die 52 Plain 4 Obverse

* Images are of the actual product not stock images

A collectable silver Shilling of Queen Victoria, dated 1874. The obverse features the second uncrowned young head of the queen facing left with the hair bound with a fillet - referred to as type A3 - by the engraver William Wyon. The reverse shows the denomination ‘SIX PENCE’ in the centre, branches of laurel on the left and oak on the right, tied below with a ribbon. A crown appears above and the date below with the die number of 52 above. The design of this reverse is the work of the engraver Jean Baptiste Merlen. This sixpence has a rare variant of a ‘plain 4’ in the date (listed in Davies with Dies 4 + C ) rather than the ‘crosslet 4' or ‘t-bar 4’. Our research suggests that only a handful of examples known and none are currently on the market. Unfortunately this coin has once been gilded, but will still represent a very rare example of the plain 4 type die variant. Spink 3910.
