Gold Third Guinea of George III, dated 1813. This was the last year in which Guineas were minted, the denomination falling out of circulation as the demand for specie increased and banknotes use rose with the economic pressures of the Peninsular Wars. These 1813 coins were minted specifically to pay Wellington’s armies on the continent. The obverse features the second laureate portrait of George III, facing right. The reverse shows a crown above the date. Earlier issues include a reverse legend that spoke to George’s claim to the French throne which was relinquished at the time the parliaments of Great Britain and Ireland became united (1801). Gold Third Guineas were only minted during George III’s reign, introduced in 1797. This example (certificate number 36332853) has been graded MS62 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). It supplied in its holder which displays the grade and cert number.
